Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, on Monday afternoon conducted a follow-up visit to the Haags Bosch Landfill Site on the East Bank of Demerara to assess ongoing operations and ensure that key measures are being implemented to strengthen the facility’s management systems.
She was accompanied by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Miguel Choo-Kang; Deputy Permanent Secretary (Administration), Dr. Josh Kanhai; and Chief Engineer, Fazal Wahab.
The visit forms part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to enhance national solid waste management and ensure that landfill operations align with environmental best practices. During the engagement, Minister Manickchand met with site managers and technical officers to review progress on infrastructure maintenance, waste segregation, and the implementation of improved disposal methods.
Minister Manickchand stressed that effective landfill management is vital to maintaining clean, healthy communities and supports the overall goals of the Government’s National Beautification and Waste Management Plan. She reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to continuous oversight and collaboration with local authorities to ensure that facilities like Haags Bosch remain functional, sustainable, and responsive to the country’s growing waste management needs.
In addition to strengthening operations at Haags Bosch, the Ministry plans to establish landfill facilities in Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10. This initiative aims to expand sustainable waste management infrastructure nationwide and improve environmental conditions across all regions of Guyana.
