Guyana has officially introduced its first locally developed nano-fertiliser, a move the government says will mark a significant step in agricultural innovation and productivity.

The launch took place Wednesday at the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) in Burma, Mahaicony, with Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha and other key stakeholders in attendance.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Agriculture, the GRDB, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), and ZURI Farm Hub Limited. It aims to increase productivity, lower input costs for farmers, and promote more sustainable farming practices.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Mustapha described the introduction of nano-fertiliser as a “game changer” for the country’s agriculture sector, particularly the rice industry.

“This launch reflects our government’s strong belief that farmers must benefit first from innovation. I encourage farmers across Guyana to embrace this nano-fertilizer to reduce costs, increase yields, and improve soil health over time. I am anticipating widespread adoption of this high-efficiency fertilizer. It will significantly help us meet our national rice yield and acreage targets, ensuring we maintain our competitive edge in the regional and international markets.”

Nano-fertilisers use nanotechnology to deliver nutrients more efficiently to crops. Unlike conventional fertilisers, they release nutrients slowly and in a controlled manner, reducing waste and minimising environmental impact.

GRDB agronomist, Dr. Ghansham Payman, highlighted the environmental advantages of the new product.

“Today we are living with the effects of climate change. This nano-fertilizer significantly reduces emissions and carbon footprints. These fertilizers offer similar or even slightly higher yields compared to traditional nitrogen-based fertilizers,” he said.

The launch aligns with the Government’s broader goals of enhancing food security, climate resilience in agriculture, and empowering local farmers through innovation.

Agriculture, particularly rice production, is a critical sector for the national economy. Authorities expect the adoption of nano-fertiliser to make a measurable impact in upcoming planting seasons, with outreach and training programmes planned to support farmers nationwide.
