Police in Region Six are on the hunt for a man who went on a destructive rampage early Sunday morning, smashing glass doors, windows, and ATMs at both the Republic Bank and Scotia Bank branches in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
According to reports, the incident occurred after several ATMs were out of service, frustrating the suspect, who has not yet been identified. The man reportedly rode up to the Republic Bank branch at Lot 16 Strand, New Amsterdam, on a motorcycle.
After experiencing difficulties with the ATM, he returned to his motorcycle, armed himself with a hammer, and began striking the machine and shattering the glass at the front of the building.
Not stopping there, the suspect then made his way to the nearby Scotia Bank branch, where he continued his rampage, smashing the glass windows and damaging property.
Commander of Region Six, Assistant Commissioner Shivpersaud Bacchus, confirmed to this publication that police received complaints from both banking institutions and have since launched an investigation. “We received reports of a male individual who damaged property at Republic Bank and subsequently at Scotia Bank. The suspect used an object to destroy the ATM machine and the glass windows,” Bacchus stated.
A video circulating on social media shows the man in the act of smashing the glass doors and windows at the Republic Bank, sparking outrage and concern among residents.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the suspect may be suffering from mental health challenges. According to sources, he had a similar outburst a few weeks ago when he allegedly damaged a snow cone cart and threatened the operator in front of the New Amsterdam Market.
Police investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to locate and apprehend the perpetrator.
