GGDMA backs GGMC crackdown on illegal mining, smuggling

The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) has expressed full support for the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) in its recent crackdown on illegal mining and smuggling operations across the country.

In a statement, the Association noted that the Commission recently conducted enforcement exercises in the Sand Hills and Toroparu areas, during which several illegal miners and raiders were detained, and a number of unlicensed shops and operations dismantled. The GGDMA also commended the Guyana Police Force for its support during the operation.

According to the Association, it has long urged the GGMC to intensify its enforcement efforts to curb illegal gold mining. The GGDMA said it welcomes this renewed campaign and is calling on the Commission to expand the exercise to other areas and move toward the regularization of landings within mining districts.

The Association further highlighted that illegal mining and unauthorized commercial operations often fuel other criminal activities such as human trafficking, gold smuggling, and the sale of illegal drugs. These, it warned, have in the past been linked to criminal gangs in Venezuela, including the notorious Sindicato group.

“At a time when Guyana is under threat from its aggressive neighbour, it is imperative that all measures be taken to stop activities that contribute to financing operations in Venezuela,” the GGDMA stated.

Reiterating its long-standing call for an end to illegal mining, the Association reminded miners that all gold must be sold to the Guyana Gold Board or authorized dealers, and that proper records should be maintained for verification purposes.
