Caribbean leaders on Friday congratulated Dr Godwin Friday on his election as Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, signalling regional support as the country enters a new political chapter.
President Dr Irfaan Ali said he looks forward to closer cooperation with the incoming leader, noting that the region is confronting shared challenges and opportunities. Ali said he anticipated further strengthening of bilateral ties and deeper regional integration.
Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who chairs CARICOM, also welcomed Friday’s victory.
“Congratulations to Dr. Godwin Friday as he begins his tenure as Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. His election signifies a new chapter for the Vincentian people, and Jamaica stands in solidarity with our Caribbean neighbour at this important moment,” Holness said.
Holness added that he looks forward to working with Prime Minister Friday as the region continues to advance regional cooperation, and create greater opportunities for our citizens.
Both leaders praised outgoing Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves for his service to St Vincent and the wider Caribbean. Holness said, “I commend Dr. Ralph Gonsalves for his long and dedicated service to the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and to the Caribbean region.”
He added that Gonsalves had been a strong voice within CARICOM, consistently advocating for deeper regional cooperation and a more integrated Caribbean community.
Holness said Gonsalves’ passion for regionalism and his unwavering belief in the value of collective action had shaped key regional discussions.
He also noted that St. Vincent and the Grenadines will continue to benefit from his deep knowledge, experience, and commitment to national progress.
President Ali separately expressed appreciation for Gonsalves’ long tenure, saying his contributions to CARICOM “will be long remembered.”
Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar also extended her congratulations to Dr Friday.
“I commend the citizens of Saint Vincent for upholding the highest ideals of democracy.
“May God bless the newly elected government as they begin this new chapter of service to the people of Saint Vincent.”
