High-tech dental labs slash wait times, deliver free services

Two major dental facilities — a Dental Simulation Lab and a Digital Dental Lab — were commissioned on Thursday at the Cheddi Jagan Dental Centre, marking a significant upgrade in dental training and public service delivery.

The Simulation Lab features 15 advanced dental simulators designed to strengthen hands-on instruction for Dental Therapists and Dental Surgery students, replacing older equipment donated years ago.

The Digital Lab, outfitted with intraoral scanners and 3D printers, will enable full in-house production of dental crowns and bridges. The technology will cut production times from several weeks to 2–3 days, with same-day options for urgent cases.

All digital dental services will be provided free of charge. A single crown typically costs about $150,000, offering substantial savings for patients.

A White Coat Ceremony was also held for Dental Technicians enrolled in a programme relaunched two years ago, marking their transition from classroom learning to clinical practice.

Principal Dental Surgeon Dr Marvin Monize described the facilities as “a significant milestone for oral health care,” while Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony said the investments are part of wider plans to modernise the health sector.

The event was also attended by Dr Ramjohn, Dr Collin Waterman, Dr Sergio Africano and other staff and students.
