Police have taken three suspects into custody as investigations continue into the alleged robbery and murder of a Chinese businessman at Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice.
The incident occurred on December 22, 2025, at about 5:00 a.m. and claimed the life of 61-year-old businessman Chen Yongping. Another man, Chen Dongrong, 32, was injured during the attack.
According to police, based on intelligence received, three males were arrested on Monday.
The suspects include a 17-year-old from Bush Dam, Canje, and two 29-year-old men from the Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme.
Police reported that the suspects were cautioned, interviewed, and made admissions. They remain in custody as the investigation continues.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Chen Yongping and Chen Dongrong, both businessmen of the same address, left their home at Lot 21, Cumberland Village, around 3:00 a.m. to conduct business at the Port Mourant Market, Corentyne, Berbice.
At approximately 5:00 a.m., while returning home, they were reportedly confronted by two identifiable males armed with knives. During the encounter, the assailants allegedly robbed the victims of cash and cellular phones.
Police said Chen Yongping was robbed of an iPhone 12 Pro Max valued at $322,000 and an undetermined sum of cash, while Chen Dongrong was relieved of $150,000 in cash and an iPhone 12 Pro Max valued at $342,000.
Both men sustained injuries during the attack and were taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for treatment. Chen Yongping later died while receiving medical care. Chen Dongrong, who was admitted to Ward 8 with a fractured skull, has since been treated and discharged.
The body of Chen Yongping is currently at a funeral parlour awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said investigations are ongoing as they continue to gather evidence in the matter.
