UG Council identifies Sir Ronald Sanders as next Chancellor

Sir Ronald Sanders has been identified as the prospective Chancellor of the University of Guyana, following the completion of the tenure of Professor John Edward Greene, the Government of Guyana said.

Under Section 9 of the University of Guyana Act, the Chancellor is elected by the University’s Council, which has now put forward Sanders for the position.
Sanders, a former Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford, holds a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Sussex. He has received honorary doctorates from the University of the West Indies and the University of Guyana and has held senior academic fellowships at institutions including the University of London and the University of Toronto.

He is currently Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to the United States and the Organisation of American States and has served three terms as president of the OAS Permanent Council. He has also served as a member of UNESCO’s Executive Board.

The government said Sanders’ academic and diplomatic experience would strengthen the University of Guyana’s global profile, particularly as the country expands investment in human capital.
Professor Greene was thanked by the government for his service and contribution to the development of the University.
