A 33-year-old man died and another person was injured in a traffic accident on Sunday night on the Diamond New Interlink Road, East Bank Demerara, police said.
Jason Bhojedat, of Annandale, East Coast Demerara, who was driving a minibus, was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle collided with a motor car and then hit a light pole, overturned several times, and came to rest on the western parapet.
A 31-year-old male passenger in the minibus and the 28-year-old driver of the motor car were injured and taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital for treatment; both were subsequently discharged.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the motor car, PKK 6633, was travelling south in the eastern lane behind minibus BAK 8702 and allegedly attempted to overtake, colliding with the right rear of the minibus.
The motor car driver, a labourer from the Diamond New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, is in police custody assisting with the investigation. A breathalyser test was not conducted due to injuries he sustained to his mouth.
Bhojedat’s body was removed to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home and awaits a post-mortem examination. Police said investigations are ongoing.
