A mechanical failure in a cement truck triggered a multi-vehicle accident on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge today, leaving one person dead and three others injured, the Ministry of Public Works said.
The deceased has been identified as Scott Dorwart, a taxi driver from Grove, East Bank Demerara. One person remains in serious condition, while two others sustained minor injuries and are receiving medical attention.
The ministry confirmed the collision involved five vehicles, including the cement truck and a motorcycle. “Immediately following the incident, emergency services—including the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Fire Service, and emergency medical personnel—were dispatched to the scene. Specialised teams have already conducted thorough wash-down of the bridge surface to clear debris and spilled materials, ensuring the structure is safe for the resumption of traffic,” the ministry said in a statement read.
Authorities dismissed rumours that the truck was overweight, confirming it passed axle load checks prior to crossing. “The cause of the incident has been identified strictly as a mechanical malfunction,” the ministry said.
The ministry extended condolences to the family of the deceased and urged patience from commuters as recovery efforts continue.
