The driver of a motor lorry is in police custody following a fatal accident on Tuesday on the Cornelia Ida Public Road, West Coast Demerara.
The collision involved lorry GAD 7032, driven by a 42-year-old man from Friendship, East Bank Demerara, and an electric cycle ridden by 64-year-old Roy Chanka of Cornelia Ida, who died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Preliminary inquiries indicate the lorry’s left front wheel struck the cycle as it turned into Cornelia Ida Access Road. Chanka was transported unconscious to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
CCTV footage has been obtained, and a breathalyzer test on the driver showed no traces of alcohol. Investigations are ongoing, and the body has been taken to Ezekiel Funeral Home pending a post-mortem.
