PNC pays tribute to Dr Rupert Roopnarine

The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) has expressed condolences on the passing of Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, a senior member of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA).

The WPA was a partner in the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) coalition, of which the PNCR is the largest block.
Dr. Roopnaraine was 83 at the time of his death. He served as Education Minister in the APNU government. The PNCR described him as a “son of the soil, patriot, and intellectual” whose work in advancing democracy, fairness, and national unity earned respect across political lines.

A co-founder of the WPA, Roopnaraine was also a prominent advocate for democracy and social justice. His influence extended into education, literature, and the arts, where his scholarly and creative work enriched Caribbean thought.

He was remembered as a dedicated teacher and mentor who inspired many in Guyana and the diaspora. His documentary The Terror and the Time is considered an important work of Caribbean political and cultural history.

The PNCR extended sympathy to his family, associates, and WPA colleagues, saying his legacy would continue to inspire the pursuit of a just and united Guyana.
