The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) is preparing to kick off its 2026 season, with the first competition for novice athletes scheduled for March 8, officials said.
President Franklin Wilson expressed optimism about the event, highlighting that registration is ongoing and that the federation is finalizing all logistics to ensure a successful start to the year. “We are hoping for a good turnout in terms of athletes for this segment of the GAPLF season, and sponsorship is something we have been pursuing,” Wilson said. He added that, following his recent election as president, the federation has been working to establish the necessary structures and arrangements to support a smooth competition.
Wilson also emphasised the importance of the novice segment in developing the next generation of powerlifters. “This is the first entry into mainstream competition for the novices and junior athletes. They will want to make an impact on the platform and show that they are ready to eventually take on the more experienced competitors,” he said.
The March 8 competition marks the official start of GAPLF’s 2026 season, providing emerging athletes with an opportunity to showcase their strength and skill.
