Guyana disqualified from Concacaf U-20 tournament following on-field altercation

Guyana has been disqualified from further participation in the Concacaf Under-20 tournament following a ruling by the Concacaf Disciplinary Committee over a physical altercation involving Guyana and Anguilla players last week.

The incident occurred during a match between Guyana and Anguilla on February 28 at Stadion Rignaal Jean Francisca.
The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) said it had received the Committee’s final ruling and accepted the decision, describing the outcome as “deeply disappointing” given what had been a promising campaign for its Under-20 programme.
After reviewing video footage in its possession, the federation said it concluded the altercation was neither provoked nor instigated by its players.
“Notwithstanding this finding, the GFF maintains its unwavering expectation of the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and respect for the game from all staff and players at all times,” the federation said in a statement.
It added that national teams representing Guyana on international duty carry a heightened responsibility to serve as ambassadors for the country and the federation, acknowledging that some players did not meet that standard in this instance.
The GFF said it would conduct a comprehensive review to determine what additional measures could be implemented to better prepare players and staff to manage similar situations in the future.
