A post-mortem examination has determined that Otis John Jordan Payne, of South Haslington, East Coast Demerara, died from peritonitis, an infection of the abdomen caused by a perforated stomach ulcer.
Payne, who had been arrested in connection with a domestic violence matter, died on Tuesday while in custody at the Cove and John Police Station.
The examination was conducted on Friday by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation mortuary. Specimens were taken for a toxicology report.
The body was subsequently released to the family.
