Swift deportation for illegal Brazilian miners

Five Brazilian nationals have been ordered to leave Guyana within 24 hours after pleading guilty to illegal entry and illegal mining charges.

The directive was handed down after the men appeared via Zoom at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Clive Nurse, following their arrest by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in collaboration with other regulatory agencies.

Those charged are Antonio Isal Das Soura, 49; Michael De Souza Martin, 26; Clinton Martins Fernandes, 19; and Matheus Sere Martins, 20.

The Ministry of Natural Resources welcomed the swift action taken by authorities, noting that the arrests form part of ongoing efforts to eradicate illegal mining and ensure compliance with the country’s laws and regulations.

The ministry emphasised that cracking down on illegal mining is critical to protecting the environment, upholding the rule of law and safeguarding Guyana’s natural resources for future generations.

It also reminded stakeholders that enforcement operations are continuing across all districts, warning that anyone found in breach of the law will face the full extent of the legal system.
