New digital registry to track licensing, traffic offences

The Attorney General’s Chambers has announced plans to roll out a digital registry capturing key information on road users, including licensing details and past traffic offences.

The initiative, directed by President Dr. Irfaan Ali, forms part of the Government’s Safe Country agenda aimed at improving road safety and enforcement.

The registry will be accessible to several agencies, including the Guyana Police Force, Judiciary, Director of Public Prosecutions, Guyana Prison Service, and the Guyana Revenue Authority. Authorities say the system will strengthen enforcement measures such as the Demerit Point System, which allows for the suspension or revocation of driver’s licences.

Additionally, the Attorney General’s Chambers is preparing new amendments to the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act. These will target issues such as noise nuisance from vehicles and littering in public spaces.
