Buzz of opportunity as apiculture project launched in hinterland communities

A new apiculture project aimed at expanding income opportunities for residents and strengthening the growing honey industry was launched in a local community on Thursday.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha visited Nappi Village to formally launch the initiative, which also covers the villages of Parishara Village and Hiawa Village.

The project, which forms part of a commitment made by President Irfaan Ali, targets villagers—particularly women—and saw approximately 340 beehives distributed across the region.

Addressing farmers at the launch in Nappi Village, Minister Mustapha said national honey production was relatively low prior to government intervention and investment in the sector.

He said that by the end of 2026, production is projected to increase by an additional 2,000 to 5,000 gallons as support to the sector is expanded.

Mustapha added that apiculture specialists have been working with communities to further develop the industry, alongside direct investments.

He also said that, through the New Guyana Marketing Corporation, the ministry will assist in securing markets for honey and other related products.

In addition to hives and technical support, planting materials and other agricultural inputs were distributed to farmers from the three villages.

The minister was accompanied by Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Brown and Minister within the Ministry of Local Government Pauline Sukhai.
