Boskalis signs US$11.2M contract to dredge Demerara Channel

The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) and Boskalis CPG Inc. on Tuesday signed an $11.2 million contract to dredge a key section of the Demerara River channel.

The project aims to improve access for shipping vessels and boost port efficiency along one of the country’s main maritime corridors.

The agreement covers dredging works between Houston and Golden Grove on the East Bank of Demerara.

Public Utilities and Aviation Minister Deodat Indar said the project followed consultations with shipping industry representatives who highlighted the need for additional dredging along the river.

The works will cover a 9-km stretch of the navigational channel over two months, widening it to 100 metres and deepening it to 5 metres.

Authorities said the project is expected to facilitate the movement of goods and services, improve vessel access to the Demerara channel, and enhance overall port operations.

Permanent Secretary Vishal Ambedkar and senior officials from MARAD and Boskalis CPG Inc. attended the signing ceremony. (DPI)
