Post-mortem confirms Berbice taxi driver died from stab wounds, not crash injuries

A taxi driver whose death was initially believed to have resulted from a crash at Edinburgh Public Road, East Bank Berbice, was fatally stabbed multiple times, a post-mortem examination confirmed on Wednesday.

Oswain Lambert Lawson, 41, of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, died from multiple incised stab wounds resulting in haemorrhage and collapsed lungs, according to Government Pathologist Dr Vivekanand Brijmohan.

Police said Lawson had been attending a social gathering at a shop along Edinburgh Public Road when an argument allegedly erupted between him and a 21-year-old man.

Investigators believe the confrontation escalated and Lawson was allegedly stabbed. Police said the suspect is reportedly the brother of a woman with whom Lawson shared a relationship.

According to investigators, Lawson later drove away in motor car HD 8644 but subsequently lost control of the vehicle, which plunged into a nearby trench.

Public-spirited citizens pulled Lawson from the vehicle in an unconscious state and transported him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The matter was initially treated as a fatal accident before investigators discovered several suspected stab wounds on Lawson’s upper body during an examination of the body.

Police later arrested a 21-year-old contractor from Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice, who remains in custody assisting with investigations.

The case file has since been sent for legal advice.
