Police urge public to record and report speeding, overcharging and misconduct in public transport

The Guyana Police Force is urging citizens to report irregularities within the public transportation system, saying increased public cooperation is needed to improve accountability and service delivery.

Traffic ranks, speaking on the Force’s weekly “Road Safety and You” programme, said issues such as fare increases, operator conduct, speeding and discrimination continue to affect commuters, and encouraged passengers to use available reporting channels.

“We urge you to report it to us so that we can take action. If you don’t help us, we cannot see everything that happens out there. So whether it’s recording something or providing some form of evidence, it will help us to prosecute these offenders,” Police Sergeant Anjan Bandran said.

President of the United Minibus Association, Eon Andrews, said a multi-agency code of conduct governs public transport operations, including hire car drivers and interactions between operators and commuters.

“This code will help to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of public transportation and make public transportation systems accessible to all commuters on a non-discriminatory basis,” he added.

He said the code sets standards for behaviour within the sector, aimed at improving safety, efficiency and accessibility.

The code also covers fare display requirements, speeding, non-discriminatory service, and the use of uniforms and identity badges, among other provisions.
