A call about dinner, then tragedy

A phone call about dinner was the last conversation Jonelle Giddings had with her husband, Jermaine Smart, 27, before he was killed in a motorcycle collision along the Mibicuri Public Road, Black Bush Polder, on Wednesday evening.
The crash involved Smart’s motorcycle and another being ridden by a 14-year-old student. Police said Smart was travelling west on motorcycle CP 1482 when he collided head-on with the other bike, which was approaching without its headlamp illuminated.
“He called and asked what’s for dinner tonight, I told him I was frying rice and plantains and he said, ‘Okay, I’m coming home,'” Giddings said. “And I ended up cut off, and that was the last thing. I didn’t hear anything from him since.”
Giddings said the family was told the other rider may have crossed into Smart’s path, but the exact circumstances of the crash remain unclear.
She said she hoped the tragedy would serve as a warning about riders operating motorcycles without lights or licences.
“I heard he’s 14. He shouldn’t even be riding a bike,” she said, adding that she hoped the teenager recovered and would caution other young people in the community.
