Senior citizens to get $20,000 transport allowance from next Wednesday

Senior citizens across Guyana will begin receiving the government’s new $20,000 annual transportation allowance from next Wednesday.

Human Services and Social Security Minister Dr Vindhya Persaud said the process has been designed to be simple and convenient for pensioners nationwide.

Persaud said the allowance is intended to help older persons meet everyday transportation needs, whether for medical appointments, shopping, ferry or boat rides, or visiting family, noting that pensioners require transport for various daily needs including trips to the hospital or clinic for medication.

Pensioners receiving payments through the post office or other payment agencies should take their 2026 pension book to the nearest Ministry of Human Services and Social Security office to be stamped with a voucher valued at $20,000, Persaud said.

The voucher can then be cashed at post offices or approved payment agencies, including MoneyGram, Western Union and SurePay.

Those receiving pensions through bank accounts or MMG will have the allowance deposited directly into their accounts. (DPI)
