Several arrested as GRA, CANU intercept $71M cannabis shipment

Several persons were taken into custody after Customs Officers of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) officers seized foreign cannabis valued at approximately $71 million during a search of two incoming barrels from the United States on Tuesday.

Acting on information received, the officers searched the barrels and discovered 71 transparent parcels containing 37.2 kilogrammes of cannabis, along with three pistols and eighteen 9mm rounds.
The suspects are in custody assisting with investigations.

The seizure forms part of ongoing collaborative efforts by GRA Customs and CANU officers to prevent the entry of illicit drugs concealed in cargo and other shipments, with the agencies reaffirming their commitment to strengthening security measures and protecting Guyana’s borders against drug trafficking.
