A Golden Generations Hub was launched on Monday in the village of Westminster, Region Three, marking another milestone in Guyana’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its senior citizens.
The hub was launched by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, through its Difficult Circumstances Unit (DCU).
Located at the Westminster Community Centre, the hub is designed as a vibrant, inclusive space where older residents can engage in a range of enriching social, recreational, and educational activities.
From storytelling and group games to health-focused sessions and digital learning, the initiative aims to promote both the physical and mental well-being of seniors.
According to the ministry, the hub serves as “a sanctuary where elders can relax, share memories, form meaningful connections, and thrive during their golden years.”
A key feature of the new hub is a strategic partnership with the National Library, aimed at bridging the digital divide.
As part of the programme, library staff will assist seniors with understanding and using smartphones, tablets, and other digital devices.
The hands-on support is expected to empower elders to “communicate with family, access vital information, and navigate the modern digital world with greater confidence.”
This initiative aligns with the Government of Guyana’s broader active ageing agenda, which focuses on inclusion, dignity, and support for senior citizens. With a growing elderly population, especially in rural and peri-urban communities, the ministry is actively working to roll out Golden Generations Hubs in every region of the country.
The launch of the Westminster hub builds on similar initiatives introduced in other communities such as Den Amstel and Bath Settlement, and reflects a national push to ensure no elder is left behind.
The programme is part of a wider social protection strategy to support Guyana’s ageing population in line with international frameworks such as the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing.
