Former People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) member Ronald Bulkan is in support of what he hopes will be a new political culture as he joins Amanza Walton-Desir in her newly formed political party, ‘Forward Guyana’.
Walton-Desir, earlier this week, severed ties with the PNCR. Bulkan also tendered his resignation, following a two-decade-long history with the PNCR.
He told Ignite News today that he believes in the vision and drive of Walton-Desir and is keen on offering his support in her endeavours.
“At this stage I am offering support to Amanza in this quest of hers which is to create a new political culture. My own feeling is that Guyana has been trapped for too long where the choices before the electorate have been basically defined by ethnicity and not been about ideas. We keep having recurring ethnic censuses,” Bulkan stated.
The former PNCR member, who served as Minister of Communities during the APNU-AFC tenure in government, said he has always held the view that votes in Guyana have principally been used as a negative weapon; that is, to keep the other side out. He suggested that, depending on race, citizens are held captive—as prisoners of racial identity—to keep the other side out, while unable to principally focus on deliverables of the party getting their votes.
“I think we need to break away; for Guyana to really progress and move forward… the votes really need to be used in a positive act; that is, you are voting to support ideas that are in constance with your own beliefs and aspirations.”
Bulkan said that he supports Walton-Desir’s capabilities to effect change. He said that despite the movement being untested and having little political experience, there is a positive light with the Forward Guyana political party.
Recently, several prominent figures have resigned from the PNCR, including former General Secretary Geeta Chandan-Edmond, Region Four Chairman Daniel Seeram, and Vice Chairman Samuel Sandy.
