Stacy Walton, a 22-year-old resident of Alexander Street, New Amsterdam, lost her life in a tragic accident around 01:50 hrs on Friday along the No. 7 Public Road in East Berbice.
Walton was driving motor car PAG 2279, which is owned by Alfred De Jonge of New Amsterdam. Investigations revealed that she had been consuming alcohol earlier in the evening before driving west along the southern drive lane of the roadway.
Although she was wearing her seatbelt at the time, Walton reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and ended up in a trench on the southern side. The car was partially submerged when it was discovered by public-spirited citizens, who rushed to assist. She was pulled from the vehicle in an unconscious state and transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Her body was taken to the hospital’s mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
