A 59-year-old man died on Tuesday evening after the vehicle he was driving plunged into a trench along the Bee Hive public road, East Coast Demerara.
Dead is Geewanram Girdharry of Bee Hive, Railway Embankment.
According to police in Regional Division 4’C’, the incident occurred around 17:30 hrs and involved motorcar PAC 9952, which was being driven by Girdharry.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Girdharry was heading south along the Bee Hive access road when he attempted to overtake another vehicle, motorcar PMM 2628, near a bridge. During the manoeuvre, his vehicle reportedly struck the side mirror of the other car, causing him to swerve and lose control. His car veered off the road and ended up submerged in a trench on the northern parapet.
With the assistance of public-spirited citizens, Girdharry was pulled from the submerged vehicle and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of motorcar PMM 2628 was subjected to a breathalyzer test, which returned a 0.000 BAC result.
Investigations are ongoing.
