Alfred De Jonge was today charged and granted bail in the sum of $1 million in connection with the death of his 22-year-old girlfriend, Stacy Walton.
The charge of manslaughter stems from a fatal incident that occurred in the early hours of Friday, 20 June, on the No. 7 Public Road, East Coast Berbice.
De Jonge, of Lot 7-17 Charlotte Street, New Amsterdam, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Mathias at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court in East Berbice-Corentyne to answer to the charge. The court heard that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) recommended the charge following legal advice.
The incident involved motor car PAG 2279, owned by De Jonge and being driven at the time by the now-deceased Walton, a resident of Alexander Street, New Amsterdam. Walton, reportedly in a relationship with De Jonge, was found unconscious and strapped in the driver’s seat of the submerged vehicle before being pronounced dead at the New Amsterdam Hospital. A post-mortem later revealed she died from asphyxia due to drowning.
In court, De Jonge was represented by Attorney-at-Law Chandra Sohan, who applied for bail. However, Police Prosecutor Sergeant Mark Edwards objected, citing inconsistencies in De Jonge’s statements.
Edwards said De Jonge initially claimed he had been in another vehicle and rendered assistance upon seeing the submerged car. He later admitted to being in the same vehicle during an argument with Walton, which allegedly escalated, resulting in her being pushed into the canal.
Edwards also alleged that, following the incident, De Jonge transported narcotics in his possession to a secure location before returning to the scene and alerting the authorities. The prosecution raised concerns that the accused may tamper with evidence, especially since the police file remains incomplete.
Despite objections, bail was granted, and the matter was adjourned to 21 July 2025.
The case is expected to be transferred to the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court for continuation
