Guyana cops eight medals in junior squash championships

Guyana celebrated a remarkable start at the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Championships in the Cayman Islands, with standout performances leading to multiple gold medals. Kaylee Lowe, Louis DaSilva, and sisters Alexis and Avery Arjoon each claimed individual gold, contributing to a total of eight medals for the Guyanese team.

Kaylee Lowe, the top seed in the Girls’ Under-15 category, showcased her skills by defeating Cayman Islands’ Kaylee Pierre in straight games, winning 11-3, 11-1, 11-2. Additionally, Alexis Arjoon dominated her final against Danielle Benn of Barbados, securing a 3-0 victory with scores of 11-2, 11-5, 11-3. Avery Arjoon similarly triumphed by defeating fellow Guyanese Emily Fung-A-Fat 11-4, 11-2, 11-1 in their playoff.

In the Boys’ Under-19 final, Louis DaSilva emerged victorious after a thrilling five-set match against Trinidad and Tobago’s Seth Thong, clinching the gold medal with a scoreline of 11-9, 6-11, 13-11, 11-13, 11-9.

While gold eluded some athletes, Zion Hickerson, Ethan Bulkan, and Justin Ten Pow secured silver medals in their respective categories. Hickerson lost to Savante’ Padmore in the Boys’ Under-11 final, and Bulkan fell to Bermuda’s Mason Smith in the Under-13 category. Ten Pow was defeated by Barbadian Ben Shepherd in the Under-15 final.

In a noteworthy comeback, Tehanie Munroe rallied from two sets down to win the Girls’ Under-13 Plate final against Zoey McDonald.

The competition now shifts to the doubles events, with the team championships set to conclude on Saturday.
