Georgetown taxi driver nabbed in Berbice with illegal gun remanded to prison

Jayz Halley, a 23-year-old taxi driver from Stevedore Housing Scheme, Georgetown was remanded to prison after being charged in connection with the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
The accused appeared before Her Worship Miss Mathias at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court in Region Six today, where the charge was read to him.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison. The matter postponed until July 21, 2025.
The charge stems from an incident on June 27, 2025, during which police intercepted two vehicles on the Berbice River Bridge access road around 14:00 hrs, as part of an intelligence-led operation that thwarted a planned armed robbery at a Chinese supermarket in New Amsterdam.
The interception, led by a senior police officer, resulted in the discovery of a .38 revolver bearing serial number J465543 and five live matching rounds of ammunition concealed in a compartment beneath the steering wheel of one of the vehicles.
Following the arrest, Halley was escorted to the Central Police Station compound where the firearm and ammunition were seized.
