A 43-year-old man, Kevindra Tularam of Lot 20 David Rose Scheme, Unity, East Coast Demerara, died on Saturday evening after his car slammed into the rear of a parked lorry at Good Hope public road, Mahaica.
The fatal accident occurred around 6:50 pm and involved motor vehicle PNN 6925, which Tularam was driving, and motor lorry GAF 4657, owned by a Great Diamond resident and driven by a 29-year-old man from Lethem.
Police investigations revealed that the lorry was stationary on the southern side of the road with hazard lights on while the driver and his porter were checking a mechanical issue. The driver said he felt a loud impact at the rear of the truck and, upon checking, discovered that Tularam’s vehicle had collided with it.
Tularam sustained serious injuries and was pulled from his vehicle by public-spirited citizens. He was rushed to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The truck driver tested negative for alcohol and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
