A Corentyne man has been remanded to prison following his appearance at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court on multiple charges stemming from a tragic hit-and-run accident that claimed two lives.
Avinash Naidoo, the driver of motor car HC 8905, was arrested on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, and brought before Her Worship Ms. T. Hardy on Thursday to answer to a total of five charges, including two counts of Causing Death by Dangerous Driving, contrary to Section 35(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.
Naidoo also faces three additional charges related to his alleged actions after the deadly collision: Failing to Render Assistance (Section 62(c)); Failing to Stop After an Accident (Section 62(1)(a); and Failing to Report an Accident (Section 62(2).
At his court appearance, Naidoo was not required to plead to the indictable charges of causing death but entered not guilty pleas for the summary offences. He was subsequently remanded to prison until his next court date.
The incident, which occurred on March 2, 2025, around 18:30hrs on the Line Path Public Road, involved a white Toyota Fielder wagon that fled the scene after colliding with an electric motorcycle.
The motorcycle was driven by 17-year-old Tushan Surnjnarine, with 19-year-old pillion rider Kavita Bedsan and her nine-month-old baby, Eli Surnjnarine, both of Grant 1804 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, on board.
Police reports indicate that the electric motorcycle, travelling northbound in the westernmost lane, was struck from behind by a motorcar, resulting in the rider and passenger being ejected onto the road surface.
Concerned citizens transported the injured to Skeldon Public Hospital for immediate care, followed by transfer to New Amsterdam Public Hospital for continued treatment.
Following the incident, the adolescent driver was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) early the following morning, having regained consciousness. Subsequently, Ms. Bedsan and her infant were transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital, where their condition was initially classified as serious. Sadly, both later perished from their wounds.
Ranks, including Sgt. Leitch and Constable Alder, visited the scene shortly after the accident and searched the area for CCTV footage but found none. The electric motorcycle was lodged at the Springlands Police Station for examination.
