Wendy’s, the global quick-service restaurant (QSR) chain, will open its first outlet in Guyana in August 2025, the company said on Thursday, marking its entry into the South American market through a franchise agreement with WenKai Inc.

The flagship restaurant, to be located on Vlissingen Road in Georgetown, will feature dine-in seating, drive-thru service, and delivery options. WenKai plans to open three Wendy’s outlets in Guyana by the end of 2025.

The agreement also includes future expansion into neighbouring Suriname, Wendy’s said, as the brand targets regional growth in northern South America.

“This is a proud moment for us,” said Iman Khan Cummings, franchisee and founder of WenKai Inc. “We’ve long admired Wendy’s for its commitment to quality, innovation, and hospitality. Bringing this beloved brand to Guyana—our home—is incredibly exciting. We look forward to serving fresh, made-to-order meals and building strong community relationships through this new venture.”

Carlos Ribas, senior vice president and managing director for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) at The Wendy’s Company, said the partnership with WenKai will help accelerate the company’s expansion in high-potential markets.

“Latin America is a stronghold for Wendy’s, and with experienced partners like WenKai Inc., we’re accelerating our momentum and expanding our presence across the region,” Ribas said. “The opening of the first Wendy’s restaurant in Guyana marks an exciting milestone in our journey to bring our fresh famous food to fans throughout Latin America, and it reflects our commitment to accelerate growth in high-potential markets while delivering exceptional hospitality to local consumers.”

Fresh Offerings, Familiar Favourites

The Guyana locations will follow Wendy’s global model of offering made-to-order meals using fresh ingredients. Menu options will include square hamburgers, Spicy Chicken Sandwiches, chicken nuggets, bone-in chicken, and the Frosty dessert.

“At WenKai, we’re committed to delivering excellence in every detail—from sourcing and operations to customer experience,” said Dawn Ng See Quan, head of operations. “Wendy’s is a perfect match for today’s Guyanese consumer: fresh, flavorful, and fast—but never ordinary.”

Local Franchise, Global Brand

WenKai Inc., a 100 per cent Guyanese-owned company, is led by a team of seasoned franchise operators with experience in the foodservice and hospitality sectors. The company said it aims to create jobs and raise service standards in the region.

“Wendy’s is entering a vibrant, fast-growing market, and we’re proud to be leading the way,” said Khan-Cummings. “With an experienced team and a deep appreciation for the brand, we’re confident in our ability to make Wendy’s a household name across Guyana—and soon, Suriname.”

Growth Strategy

The expansion is part of Wendy’s broader strategy to grow its presence in Latin America and the Caribbean. Rising demand in Guyana for international food brands and modern QSR experiences presents new opportunities for the chain.

Wendy’s said further announcements on new locations and grand opening events will be made in the coming weeks.
