300m athletic track, major sports hub planned for Georgetown

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali today announced that Georgetown will soon see the construction of a 300-metre international-standard athletic track, the first of its kind in the city, along with a modern sports hub to benefit both students and the wider community.
The facility will be developed near the North Ruimveldt Secondary School.
“In the vicinity of this school, there is a piece of land. We have decided to invest in a 300-metre athletic track, along with a FIFA-certified football field, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts,” President Ali told the gathering at the school’s commissioning ceremony.
The president, who made the announcement at the commissioning of the new North Ruimveldt Multilateral Secondary School, said the new complex will serve not only students of the rebuilt school but also young people in surrounding areas such as East and South Ruimveldt and Tucville —an estimated 4,000 students in total.
“It’s a first-of-its-kind facility in Georgetown,” Ali added.
To complement the infrastructure, the complex will host 60 voluntary hours of mentoring every month, with the Men on Mission initiative helping to mobilise community leaders.
“We want to create a system where men in the community step forward to mentor and guide our boys,” the president stressed.
Ali noted that the project is part of the government’s broader strategy to link education with sports and youth development, ensuring students are supported both inside and outside of the classroom.
