A 72-year-old woman from Corentyne, Berbice, died on Monday morning when the car she was travelling in collided head-on with a lorry at Dutch Four, East Coast Demerara.
Police said the accident occurred around 07:30 hrs and involved motor car PAH 8915, owned and driven by 46-year-old Thaddeus Lyte of Corentyne, Berbice, and occupied by his 72-year-old relative Lyte (deceased), along with motor lorry GAG 8567 driven by a 22-year-old resident of Soesdyke.
According to investigators, the lorry was heading east along the northern lane at about 40 kmph, while the car was heading west at a fast rate. The car reportedly overtook a line of traffic and slammed into the lorry in the southern lane, forcing both vehicles into a trench
The car’s driver and passenger were pulled from the wreck in a conscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. The woman was later pronounced dead around 09:30 hrs, while the driver was treated and sent away.
Her body is at the hospital mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination. The driver of the car is in police custody assisting with the investigation.
