Destination Guyana has been featured in the Global Sustainable Tourism Council’s (GSTC) first global digital series, Travel Redefined: Tourism for People and Planet.
The series, produced in partnership with UK-based strategic content creator Content With Purpose, promotes sustainability practices in tourism worldwide.
The series explores how sustainable and regenerative tourism supports people, planet, and prosperity through real stories and expert insights from organisations around the world. It is available to stream online.
Three films highlight Guyana’s Rupununi region and its model of community-led conservation tourism. They feature the work of Yupukari Village and Caiman House, showcasing how local knowledge, cultural heritage, and ecotourism combine to protect endangered species while sustaining livelihoods.
The stories capture scenes from tracking giant anteaters on the savannah to families earning income while preserving traditions. Guyana’s approach is framed as regenerative tourism that empowers local guides, researchers, and hospitality staff, ensuring economic benefits remain within communities.
“Guyana’s story in the Travel Redefined series shows how tourism can go beyond leisure; it can safeguard wildlife, empower youth, and preserve traditions. In the Rupununi, community-led tourism doesn’t just protect nature, it creates a future where people and planet thrive together. We are proud that our work is featured in this global series, as it reflects the essence of Guyana: authentic, sustainable, and transformative,” said Kamrul Baksh, Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority.
The launch comes as global tourism recovers strongly. According to the UN Tourism Barometer, international tourist arrivals grew 5% in Q1 2025 compared to 2024, putting the industry on track for a record year. Travel Redefined positions itself as a global call to action, urging policymakers, industry leaders, travellers, and changemakers to rethink how tourism can create positive social, cultural, environmental, and economic change.
“Travel Redefined is a powerful reminder that every journey holds the potential to leave a positive legacy,” said Randy Durband, CEO of GSTC. “Many of the featured stories come from GSTC Members who are already putting these values into practice. They serve as real-world examples of what’s possible when sustainability is placed at the heart of tourism.”
The series was filmed across six continents using local film crews. Production spanned 50 filming days and produced 24 short films, 22 thought leadership videos, 10 expert interviews, and three case studies. Topics include biodiversity conservation, carbon reduction, green mobility, waste management, equitable economic development, cultural preservation, and accessible travel experiences.
“We have embedded sustainability into every step, reflecting our environmental commitments, from using local crews to telling real-life stories that empower communities and protect the planet – proving that a flourishing, sustainable industry isn’t a distant vision. It’s happening right now, and we all have a role to play in this transformation,” said Max Smith, Founder and Managing Director at Content With Purpose.
From California’s coasts to conservation projects in the Philippines, Travel Redefined follows pioneers who are rethinking tourism to benefit both people and the planet.
