Safer communities: Mahaicony Police Station, regional command centre commissioned

The Mahaicony Police Station, built at a cost of $111.8 million, replaces an old wooden structure with a modern facility aimed at improving operational efficiency and community policing, the government said.

Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn, who led the ceremony, said the new infrastructure would strengthen public confidence in law enforcement. “We are not just commissioning new police stations; we are building a new policing culture,” he said.

In addition, the government opened the $78.4 million Command Operation Region Five Facility, designed to enhance coordination among security services and boost response capacity. Both projects form part of the “Safe City to Safe Country” programme, which is extending advanced surveillance and monitoring systems to rural and hinterland areas.

Permanent Secretary Andre Ally said timely delivery of projects was essential to ensuring communities benefit quickly, while Deputy Commissioner of Operations Errol Watts noted the site had been transformed from a dilapidated structure into “a magnificent edifice that represents progress and safety”.

The government has completed five security projects in Region Five so far this year, with three more under way. Officials said improved policing remained central to Guyana’s development agenda.
