Guyana on Tuesday held its first national children’s conference, bringing together more than 200 participants under the theme “Empowered Children, Safer Futures” to promote youth voices in policymaking.

The event, organised by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security in partnership with UNICEF, was staged at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre and drew children from Regions Three, Four and Six, including those in foster care and childcare facilities.

Workshops and discussions focused on safety, personal development and leadership, while a career exhibition showcased diverse professional opportunities.

Human Services Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud said the conference was a significant step in creating spaces where children are active partners in shaping initiatives. “Our young people must be part of the conversation and the solutions. Their voices are invaluable to building a safer and more inclusive Guyana,” she said.

UNICEF’s involvement underscored the global priority of children’s rights, organisers said. The initiative also aligns with Guyana’s obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which guarantees children the right to freely express their views on issues affecting them.

The conference comes amid heightened national focus on child protection, including the National Childcare and Development Services Act and expanded psychosocial support programmes. The ministry said the forum will become an annual event to promote inclusion regardless of background.

Participants raised concerns over cyber safety, bullying, access to education and opportunities for growth. Officials said the conference would serve as a catalyst for sustained dialogue and leadership development among young people.
