The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on Friday rejected claims that ballot boxes from Regions 4 and 8 arrived at its headquarters without official seals, calling the allegations “blatantly false.”
The commission was responding to a headline in the Kaieteur News titled “Ballot boxes from Regions 4, 8 allegedly arrived at GECOM without seals – WIN officials.” GECOM said the headline was misleading, noting that while the article included information from GECOM’s statement, the headline carried “the same weight” as the allegations made by We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) officials.
“All the ballot boxes are intact with the official seals issued by GECOM and the seals of political parties,” the commission said, adding that the allegations were intended to “obstruct the recount” in Sub-District 4 of District 4 and District 5 and “cause confusion.”
GECOM said the recount is proceeding smoothly, with the participation of all accredited election agents from political parties and the presence of local and international observers.
The commission urged all stakeholders, including the media, to rely on verified information from authentic sources before publication.
