Police have destroyed cannabis plants valued at more than $3.3 million during a raid along the Wiruni Creek in the Upper Berbice River.
Officers from the force’s Narcotics Branch discovered a three-acre plot containing about 10,000 cannabis plants, each measuring between two and five feet in height. The plants were set on fire during the two-hour eradication exercise, which began late Tuesday afternoon, authorities said in a statement.
No dried cannabis was found at the site, and no arrests were made.
Law enforcement has taken a firm stance against the drug trade, and regularly conducts eradication operations in remote riverine and forested areas where marijuana cultivation remains widespread.
