The long-awaited New Demerara River Bridge will open to vehicular traffic before the end of the month, President Irfaan Ali said today.
During a visit to the junction at Heroes Highway, the president said the final stages of load testing and roadworks on the approach routes were nearing completion.
The project includes new collector lanes designed to ease congestion for vehicles travelling from the West Bank and connecting to the Haags Bosch area.
“We’re aiming to have the bridge fully open to traffic well ahead of month-end,” Ali said, adding that the major infrastructure project was close to completion.
The bridge is considered a critical investment in Guyana’s transport network and is expected to significantly improve connectivity and mobility in the region.
Ali said future plans include the construction of two flyovers to further streamline traffic in response to growing transport demands.
Once in service, the bridge is expected to shorten travel times for commuters and commercial vehicles and stimulate economic activity across the area.
