A 19-year-old woman has been charged with murder following the death of a 20-year-old man in the North West District, police said.

Naderia James, from Baramita, appeared via Zoom at the Port Kaituma Magistrate Court before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh. She was remanded to prison, with her next court date set for 14 October 2025.

Police said James is accused of killing Kevin Smith, a Guyanese Amerindian miner from Baramita. Investigations indicate the pair had been in a relationship and living together in a makeshift wooden and plastic camp for about a year.

According to authorities, the incident occurred on 18 September at around 17:00 hrs. James reportedly returned home after consuming alcohol and found Smith in his hammock. The victim allegedly struck her on the left shoulder and right hand with a cutlass, prompting James to stab him in the chest with a handmade knife.

Smith reportedly stumbled from the camp and collapsed in nearby bushes. James then went to the Baramita Police Station, where she gave a statement about the incident.
