A team of police ranks, led by a senior officer, successfully carried out a four-day Narcotics Eradication Operation in the Upper Berbice River area between Friday, October 3 and Monday, October 6, 2025.

The operation targeted several locations, including Ebini Savannahs and Wiruni, where multiple cannabis farms and camps were discovered and destroyed.

Ebini Savannahs

During the operation in the Ebini Savannahs, police discovered a three-acre cannabis farm with plants ranging from three to six feet in height. A makeshift 20×20 feet camp was also found on the land. Both the plants and camp were set on fire.

Using a police drone, ranks later located another six-acre plot about four miles from the initial site. The area had been prepared for cultivation and contained four nursery beds with approximately 5,000 cannabis seedlings.

A 30×20 feet camp was also found with two hammocks, one 12-gauge double-barrel shotgun, one Stihl chainsaw, a Samsung cellphone, a haversack with about four pounds of suspected dry cannabis, and a box containing about thirty pounds of dry cannabis.

The firearm, chainsaw, and cellphone were taken to the Kwakwani Police Station for lodging, while the cannabis and camp were destroyed by fire. The estimated street value of the destroyed cannabis is $5,082,000.

No arrests were made.

Acting on further information, the ranks returned to Ebini, where they searched an abandoned church and discovered an additional thirty pounds of cannabis inside.

In Wiruni, Upper Berbice River, police acted on intelligence and searched a two-storey 25×30 feet wooden house surrounded by trees. Upon arrival by boat, ranks discovered approximately ninety pounds of cannabis, which was photographed and destroyed on site.

A further search of the upper flat of the house revealed a .32 pistol with one empty magazine hidden under a bed inside a black side bag, along with two cellphones. The firearm and phones were lodged at the Kwakwani Police Station.

During another search in the Wiruni area, police found a 15×10 feet one-storey house with three 20-gauge shotgun cartridges and a black tarpaulin spread out nearby containing cannabis plants about four feet in height. The plants were photographed and destroyed. A 15HP Yamaha outboard engine was seized and lodged at the Kwakwani Police Station.

Additionally, ranks discovered a three-acre plot with suspected cannabis plants and two nursery beds containing about 3,000 seedlings. The area was also prepared for further cultivation. A 15×20 feet camp, an agriculture mower, a 50HP outboard engine, and a wooden boat were found and destroyed or seized during the operation.

No arrests were made during the four-day operation.
