Former West Indies Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan has begun leading a major effort to develop cricket in Guyana’s hinterland regions, under an initiative announced by His Excellency, President Dr. Mohammed Irfaan Ali, at the 2025 Amerindian Heritage Games.
During a recent visit to Region Nine, Sarwan was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. The team met with Regional Chairman Brian Allicock, Mayor of Lethem John Macedo, and representatives from various associations and clubs. They also toured several sporting facilities across the region.
According to the Ministry, this marks the first in a series of visits to hinterland regions as part of the President’s sports development initiative. The programme is built on three key pillars — accessibility, development, and exposure — with the ultimate goal of establishing a National Heritage Team across all sporting disciplines.
“Ramnaresh Sarwan will have the full support of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport,” the statement noted, adding that “coaches from the National Sports Commission will be working closely with regional bodies, federations, and clubs to ensure all ministry and government initiatives are sustainable.”
The initiative aims to strengthen sports infrastructure and talent development in hinterland communities, ensuring athletes from all regions have equal opportunities to excel.
