Migrant students shine at fourth annual Spanglish Literacy Bee

Migrant learners took center stage at the Fourth Annual Spanglish Literacy Bee Competition, held this morning at the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD).

The event, hosted by the Ministry of Education’s Migrant Education Support Unit (MESU) in collaboration with the National Literacy Department, brought together participants from Regions Three, Four, and Georgetown, who demonstrated their growing command of both Spanish and English.

Through rounds that tested vocabulary, spelling, grammar, reading, and writing comprehension, students showcased not only their academic skill but also the cultural richness that bilingualism brings to the classroom.

The competition is part of the Ministry’s continued effort to support migrant education and promote bilingual and inclusive learning environments. It highlights how language can serve as a bridge—helping students integrate, express themselves confidently, and celebrate their diverse cultural backgrounds.

The Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring equitable access to education for every child in Guyana, noting that initiatives like the Spanglish Literacy Bee empower young learners to thrive academically while embracing their multicultural identities.
