Within the next 6–12 months, approximately 80,000 households across Guyana are expected to benefit from faster and more reliable internet as Digicel accelerates its national fiber network expansion.

In an exclusive interview with Ignite News, Digicel Guyana CEO Deonarine Gopaul said the company’s top priority remains extending connectivity to rural and hinterland communities.

“It’s a continuous journey for Digicel to improve our coverage and expand it, especially in rural areas. We usually identify areas where we are not so good. We have coverage in places where it’s not commercially viable, but it’s in the interest of national development. So, we are pushing ahead. We welcome public-private partnerships to reach those hard-to-access areas,” Gopaul said.

The telecommunications provider has already completed full fiber coverage across Georgetown and is now expanding from Diamond to Enmore. Customers in some areas can begin experiencing improved internet speeds as early as next month.

The expansion builds on Digicel’s Blue subsea fiber cable, commissioned last year, which connects Guyana with Suriname, French Guiana, Trinidad, and the United States. The system is designed to support the nation’s growing digital demand for the next 25–30 years.

Gopaul also emphasized that affordability remains central to Digicel’s approach, noting that the company maintains uniform pricing across the country, regardless of location.

“We do not do any price differentiation. What you pay in Georgetown is the same price you pay in Bartica or Region One. Although it costs much more to deliver in remote locations, we keep all rates equal so that digital inclusion remains our top priority,” he explained.

The initiative aligns with Guyana’s broader development agenda to bridge the digital divide and expand opportunities in education, healthcare, and business for residents in underserved regions.

Looking ahead, Digicel is collaborating with regulators on equitable spectrum allocation and exploring emerging technologies such as 5G and community Wi-Fi hubs to further enhance connectivity.

“Our mission is to strengthen digital inclusion across Guyana and position the country as a regional leader in connectivity,” Gopaul added.
