The government is commited to developing a fisheries sector that is more people-centred and innovation-driven, according to Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Vickash Ramkissoon.
Ramkissoon made the statement while delivering the feature address at a Fisheries Research Symposium hosted on Wednesday by the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and the University of Guyana. The event formed part of Agriculture Month 2025 activities, held under the theme “Empowering Communities: Fisheries as a Catalyst for Inclusive Agri-Food Transformation.”
“Every policy of our government is aimed towards building our people. It is people-centred. And if policies are people-centred then the country will grow. And so every policy of your government headed by His Excellency the President is people-centred and at the same time it’s innovation-driven,” Ramkissoon said.
He noted that significant effort has been made over the past five years to strengthen the agriculture sector’s resilience and sustainability.
“The agriculture sector is growing– if you look at rice, for example, the productivity, the production in rice has increased– the yield that we have is increasing as we speak, every day. So the sector is moving at a very fast rate, very speed rate because we’re using modern technologies and we’re using innovative tools to ensure that we become food secure,” the minister stated.
Ramkissoon emphasised that the fisheries sector remains vital for food security, employment, and community livelihoods. The Fisheries Department continues to implement strategic initiatives focused on sustainability, modernisation, and inclusive growth within the agriculture food sector.
