A 34-year-old woman, identified as Yolanda John of Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast, died on Wednesday night after the motorcycle she was riding collided with a cow on the Elisa Public Road, police said.

The fatal incident occurred around 19:30 hrs and involved a motorcycle, registration number unknown, driven by 23-year-old Leroy Prince, also of Dartmouth. John, who was Prince’s girlfriend, was the pillion rider at the time.

According to Prince, he had picked up John from work and was heading north along the Elisa Public Road when he attempted to avoid a cow standing on the western side of the road. Despite his effort, the motorcycle struck the animal, causing him to lose control.

John fell onto the roadway and sustained multiple injuries. She was taken to the Lima Regional Hospital, where she died while receiving treatment.

A breathalyser test conducted on Prince showed no trace of alcohol. The motorcycle has been lodged at the Anna Regina Police Station for examination by the licensing and certifying officer.

Prince remains in custody assisting with the investigation.

A post-mortem examination conducted Thursday by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh confirmed that John died from multiple injuries consistent with a motor vehicle accident.
