Aviation authority flags airport downgrade report as misleading

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) on Thursday denied a media report claiming that the Cheddi Jagan International Airport’s rescue and fire-fighting capacity had been downgraded.

In a statement, GCAA Director General Lt. Col. (Ret’d) Egbert Field said there has been no change to the airport’s status and rejected suggestions that it was reduced from Category 8 to Category 5.

“The headline and implications contained within the article are misleading,” Field said, adding that he has not signed any document to indicate such a downgrade.

The regulator said the unnamed sources cited in the article provided “inaccurate and misinformation” and noted that the GCAA does not disclose or discuss inspection findings or reports with third parties.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high aviation safety standards and assured the public that the Cheddi Jagan International Airport continues to operate safely and efficiently.
